Previous Run - The Penhill Sleep Out, 24 & 25 April 2010

So there it was, the weekend was finally approaching for the sleep over. Unfortunately Boreas, the ancient Greek god of the north wind, had started to let us all know a few weeks before the weekend, that he was still around, and that it was now his chance to do what he does best, and that is to bring the rain! So there I was, checking the weather forecast every 20 minutes from about a week before the weekend, and as I'm sure we can all agree the weather was smashing. So there was no official plan laid down, it was just going to be a free for all, come as you are, do as you like weekend, and arrive from 11h00 on the Saturday. After spending the entire day in the garden with Cindy on Friday to get everything looking neat and tidy, I only had a few things to do on Saturday morning before all arrive.

So eventually, exactly on the dot at 11h43, the first vehicle arrived, which was not a buggy. It was Mitch and Kareen, but they had a valid excuse for the choice of vehicle, their bug caught a similar disease to what mine had a few weeks ago, fourthgearplasmoses. Not long after that, Mitch and I got the fire going, and Mitch proceeded in concocting a serious potjie. A while later, everyone else started arriving in dribs and drabs. As far as buggies were concerned, it wasnt too much of a bad turn out at all, eight in total, well, eight if you include mine which was in the garage, and not on the grass playing with Floyd and all the other buggies. As the day progressed, I noticed the sip rate was fairly steady, including my own, but thank goodness I wasnt as thirsty as last year on the Friday night on the Wacky Weekend. A few folk got clever, and started to pitch their tents before things no doubt got out of hand, while others decided to throw guavas at each other. After everyone had chosen their site for the night and pitched their tents, it was finally time to chill....... Cheers! Another beer! And the kids were STILL in the pool. As late afternoon approached, we all had a portion of Mitchs potjie, which went down well, and then I stoked the fire, and eventually the meat started to go on......... Cheers! Another beer! It was great to see that although there were people that couldnt spend the night, they still made the effort to come through. Mitch and family, Solly and Dugald left at the end of the day, and Johan and Eugenie left some time in the evening, I think they might have stayed a bit longer though if my German Shepherd hadnt taken their wors off the table, sorry about that again Johan, you guys will have to come for another braai, and I will supply the wors. Anyway, the fire got bigger, and the music got louder.......... Cheers! Another beer!

Sunday morning! I was the first one up, around eightish. Cindy and I cleared a gap between all the empty glasses and beer bottles on the table under my gazebo, and fired up two coffee machines, which I think may have helped in getting most of everyone out of their tents. A couple of people ran through the shower, and I put more wood on the fire and got it going again...... Cheers! Another beer! NO I'm only joking, it was another coffee. Anton got his skottel going, and by then Id started frying breakfast on the fire, I tell you, trying to make fried eggs on a grid is not easy! After lining all our stomachs with a marvellous breakfast, we all eventually climbed into our bugs, and took a slow drive down to the Strand, where we stopped at the proverbial ice-cream shop for an ice-cream. Over here is where we said goodbye to Ouboet and family, and then the rest of us headed back to Penhill to pack up. In conclusion, I think it was a great weekend, especially the weather, but I think next time we should keep it more towards the beginning of the year, instead of taking a gamble on the weather. Thanks a lot to all who contributed and who managed to come.

Glenn.
