Previous Run - Dugald's Southern Peninsula Run - 29 August 2010

Oh the stress!!!!  Was it going to be OK for picnicking?  MSN said 'no way' the Norwegians at http://www.yr.no (usually a bloody good weather site) said 'maybe' but as we got closer to the 29th August, 'maybe' became: '16 degrees C with a fresh North-westerly breeze'.  Picnic - nothing! Time to seriously consider pizzas and hydraulics by a warm fire at Skebanga's/Red Herring in Noordhoek.

However, those of you who were there will know that this time the weather sites were less accurate than a political speech.  The weather was beeeoootiful.  The kind of weather that you have to hide from the tourists (otherwise we'd have to put up signs saying: 'Bugger off - Cape Town is full').

...So the decision had already been taken that it was not going to be a picnic.  As per earlier communications, the rendezvous point had suddenly become a hard-hat area, but we did all manage to hook up and get going by 10h15.....  Solly tried hard to join us, but when he got to Zeekoevlei, he realised that for him, the run was a lost cause.

First to arrive was Gifappel with MW and Rita.  Then (in no particular order) came:  Shrek with Anton & Naomi + kids; Ouboet & Liane; Christo and Sandra in Pink Floyd; Johan and Eugenie; Neil Beer; Gustav, Juanita + family; and Yorkie (who'd got Stian to do the driving).  We were 9 buggies in total which was a great turnout especially as most had to travel at least 60 k's to get to the start (even further for Ouboet).  In weather such as we had, the Peninsula is champagne and strawberries beautiful and I would have liked to have 'done' it all, but with most having already had a run to get there, I decided to limit the run to the best 50 k's I could....

We set off (as I said) at about 10h15 and managed to keep together - more or less - until we got to Boyes Drive.  There, Gustav's bug decided it didn't want to come with us anymore and forced Gustav to take it slowly home.  So, with tears in our eyes, we went on without them.  We stopped at the top bit of Boyes Drive to check out some whales in the distance.  Next re-group was outside Dixie's where we discovered that the rest of the whales had either taken Sunday off or were striking in sympathy with the public service.  So that we didn't feel too disappointed, they had put a buoy just off-shore that looked like a whale's tail.  (Does anyone know, by the way, why it is called the public Service?  'Public' yes, but 'Service' seems to be a bit of a misrepresentation.)  But, I digress...

Next stop was supposed to be the disused gun at the top of Redhill.  It is a nice, dangerous, fun place to take kids with great photo opportunities and a view of False Bay to kill for.  Unfortunately the Navy or someone had put a serious chain on the gate, so that took care of that.

On we went, through Scarborough and Misty Cliffs, past Soetwater and through Kommetjie to Noordhoek and Skebanga's and pizza and beer etc.  When we arrived, we were relieved to find that the South African Olympic Baboon team were not there this time.  (Something of a blessing that, because last time their leader asked to join the club and we said he couldn't because he didn't have a beach buggy.)  Skebanga's organised a big table so we could all sit and boost our skin cancer cell-count together.  We hung out there for hours, doing all the things for which we do best (eating, drinking and talking kak) in one of the best pieces of geography on the planet.

Thanks to all for coming - especially those of you who had to come a long way.  It was great seeing you all again & making some new friends.

Next Run: Whale Fest, Hermanus -  24-26 September 2010

The club members have been invited by Ronnie and Gill to stay over with them in Hermanus for the duration of the Whale Festival. All that's required from yourselves, is to bring your own bedding and food. Please note that space is limited - they might not be able to accommodate everyone indoors.  Caravans and tents also welcome. If you are interested in taking them up on their offer, please contact Rita on Sandra in order to make sure enough people bring their own tents.

Club Dance - 16 October 2010

Unfortunately the editor knows no more than the rest of the cub members about what is planned for the dance or whether it will happen as planned or be postponed again.

It seems a lot is riding on club members pre-committing about attending or not. I have made the assumption that the dance will be at Ou Skip caravan park in Melkbos, and rumour has it that there will be no food preparations this year.

I unfortunately also have no idea regarding what the club management and the entertainment committee plan for music at the event.

Please except my apologies for the lack of information, considering that the event is in less than a month.  Club members will be notified via email/sms of the progress.

Next Run: Halloween Run - End of October 2010

At the time this newsletter was compiled, Hennie unfortunately still had no idea what they were going to do, but please keep the date open as I'm sure it will be worth your while.

A word of thanks
