DWARSKERSBOS - 3-9 JANUARIE 2011 (NAOMI SE RUN)

Groete
Jannie Cahill  (alias Jan Brand, want hy kan!!!!!)

DWARSKERBOS … BYDRAE VAN DUGALD

Johan has asked me to write something in polite English about Dwarskersbos

(I didn’t know that the English were that polite:  “Excuse me, my dear chap, we are just invading your country.  We will let you have it back after the Empire.)

Anyway, here goes…

When I received Naomi’s email, I read as far as the bit about what time to meet and then I stopped for a nap.  As a result, I loaded Blue Job with all manner of outdoor delights (tent, mattress, punkah wallahs, etc.)  all of which were unnecessary because I had failed to read far enough to see that we were going to be staying in a cottage.  The cottage was just as well, as it turned out because the Dwarskersbos oord was so full it had the air of a Darfur refugee camp.  Within about 3 days, however, the place was nearly empty.  Must have been something I said.  But, I digress.

Neil and his mean green machine were first to arrive at the clubhouse.  Anton was trying to fit the contents of his house into Shrek, with difficulty.  Leaving the difficulty behind, we quit the sunny shores of Melkbos and hooked up with Ouboet & co at some farm stalletjie or other and headed on up West.

On the first night there was the usual arson in a braai-plek.  This ensured that we didn’t get cold that night.

On day two, we went to Paternoster for a beer.  Or two. And then Ouboet (who has an uncanny knack for these things) found a brilliant pub in Velddrif on the banks of the Berg River.  The pub came with a free shower and excellently cold beer, a Bokkoms factory and a semi-retired fishing boat.  Yvette Bekker (a well known figure in Velddrif, whom I have never met) writes:

Along the banks of the Berg River is a dirt road that is regarded, unofficially, as a national monument. Here large schools of Harders are netted and turned into bokkoms. Bokkoms are Harders (Mullet) that are salted, then strung into bunches and hung up to dry. They are unique to this part of the West Coast and no visitor should leave before visiting this trail.

All along this road there are rows of fish strung on ropes under reed shelters. The little fish are salted and then tied up with needle and string, hanging them to dry in the wind. Small fishing boats with oars, used for setting the harder net, lie alongside dilapidated old, wooden quays, adding to the quaintness and charm of this area.
Bokkoms are synonymous with Velddrif. These dried fish are the biltong of the area. This unique, traditional delicacy is highly prized by initiates and best enjoyed with white wine, or with bread, apricot jam and black coffee.
We preferred our bokkkoms with beer, but without the bokkoms.  Ouboet bribed/frightened the owner of the fishing boat to take us on a voyage around the island in the river.   Naomi re-enacted scenes from Titanic but
there was a conspicuous lack of icebergs, so the journey had a happy ending.  With beer.
On the second day, we went to Elands- and Lamberts- bays.  Getting there was interesting.  We went on a toll-road next to the railway line – it was grondpad but in really good condition.  At the end of the toll road there was a bit of provincial road.  This was so corrugated that all my teeth fell out and I had to suck on my fish and chips at lunch.
On the third day, I returned home after breakfast, so I can accept no responsibility for what followed…

DWARSKERSBOS…

VIVA DWARSKERSBOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PUTT- PUTT—13 FEBRUARIE 2011 (HENNIE SE RUN)

Ha. This time my planning was spot on. Yolandie and I even had time to test all the courses to make sure it will live up to the Wildbuggers world class standards. I even had time to confer with the President to make sure that the costs will fit our pockets
So ek kom toe daar aan so 9:15.
Net buggies waar jy kyk. Pragtig.
Jeez bru, petrol is not that expensive yet.
So we take a nice lazy drive through Bothasig and Durbanville hills. Halfway through Johan V. Stops us. Anyhow,no harm done. We get to the driving range all safe and sound.
Once there Johan phones the lady of the ACL to find out where they are. Just to find out that she is in the car right next to him. She brought the cutest Alsatian with her that and needless to say it drew a lot of attention. Of course some pics had to be taken. Everyone posing in front of the buggies and the President shaking the lady`s hand while handing the hard earned, hair cutting, money over.

As things go some players are done before other and of course the only available shade and chairs are used to sit around and wait for the other players to finish. With a restaurant/bar available some people make themselves at home while having a well earned beer.  Tim and family and Johan and family has to leave so we decide to go outside and have the raffle.

WORCESTER KAMP  (OUBOET SE KAMP)
Bydrae van Kareen.

Well we only left home on Saturday morning but met up with everyone at the Fish & Chip shop in Worcester. Run by a Moslem dude nogal. A first for me.
Anyway, we then ate our lunch under some trees and afterwards headed on to our campsite.
What a beautiful place! Very clean BUT THE FLIES!!!!!! Oh my hat. Even Niel’s “stokkies” didn’t help much.
Miguel loved the river and after some coaxing, he did the zip line. Well after that we just couldn’t stop him.
We all sat and chilled but by early evening, Miguel, Adolf and Ouboets’ son were missing. Clearly they took a ride in the canoe but didn’t tell anyone. Needless to say when they came back, I gave them all a piece of my mind. Niel is now convinced that I’m a She Devil.
The evening was fantastic all round but we went to bed fairly early and left the others to do their thing. But at 2pm I woke up and badly needed to go to the loo. After much uhming and aahing, I woke Mitch up to come with me coz I was just too bladdy scared to go outside alone. Anyway, once outside, we looked up, and the sky was full of stars. You don’t see this in the city. It was awesome.
Woke up fairly early on Sunday and everyone started packing up. Even though we were only there for a night, it was the most relaxing weekend I’ve had in a long time.
Thanks Ouboet!
Luv.Chilli Bite

WORCESTER KAMP (OUBOET SE KAMP)
Bydrae van Naomi.

How to describe the Worcester Camp – funny you should ask me as it is still something I think about all the time.

After some initial “haak-plekkies” with Du Toits Kloof Burning, phoning Ouboet to get redirected, then phoning Niel to say he must meet us at the Club House instead of in Kraaifontein and then again phoning Niel to change plans, as Ouboet got back to us just in time to say the pass is open through the tunnel and we will be able to travel the shorter route to Worcester – “phewwww” – we were on our way at last.

We left here at around 2.30 pm and on our way to Niel – a message on my cell-phone – “Het julle verdwaal of vergeet van my – EK IS DORS” I had to laugh. Nope we did not forget about you Niel, the traffic was an absolute nightmare so travelling was slow. Eventually we met up with Niel at the One-Stop just outside Kraaifontein, had a few words of “comfort” for our thirsty friend and were on our way.

The mountain loomed with red, angry flames, licking high up in the air. What a sad site, I could well imagine all the scared baboons jumping off cliffs and into stationary cars to hide from the sea of red horror. We passed and into the “safety” of the tunnel, how that thing can carry a whole mountain on it back is not for me to understand, but safely on the other side the country was murky with smoke. It is still better to be in an open Beach Buggy, with your hair in the wind, smelling “fresh smoke”, than in a car with all windows closed (just ask our fellow “Bugger” Kareen, with the comfort of a Merc) under her a..!! – hehe. But I am still very glad they came for the Saturday to sleep over with us. It was magic having all our friends with us.

We got to Worcester with great directions from Ouboet, met up with him, Gustav, Juanita and the kids and drove the approximately 10k’s to the camp site. One of the site’s highlights was driving the beach buggies over the narrow bridge with water nearly touching the bridge. This is Mother Nature at its best (yeah a bit of man-made construction made it possible to get to the other side, safely). We got to the camp, just as the sun bid its farewells to this side of the world and Niel got his wish – an ice cold beer popped open and I was also given one for the thirst. With Ouboet showing us the great site, we walked around inspecting our sleeping area; ablutions, swimming area and our general “come together area” en moenie die buitelug stort vergeet nie. Pitching the tents was “fast and furious” as everyone wanted to relax. Shrek was the camps Juke-box and thanks to Sandra’s great CD we had music for a week.
Jean and “Skoonseun” – was already there to prepare and set up camp for Ouboet and Leana. Friday evening and the fire is burning hotter that hot, but not as hot as our friend Niel was. Niel picked up a nasty bronchitis but was determined that it will not spoil his very well earned rest weekend. After taking his “moettie” he was back with us to enjoy super weather, great friends and wonderful food. We had a terrific 1st night, but our music bothered campers 1000 meters away – Florence Nightingale, visited our site to say that we are not allowed to play music and she was adamant. And it was not even loud!!!! This was around 10 pm and everyone silently wondered what a young couple does going to bed at 10. This is a get-away-from-home-and-stress weekend and already people are stressing the Wild Buggers. Well none of that, we killed the sound so that only the selected few could listen and carried on with our great evening – our laughter had to travel 10km away, but people tend to not worry about that, only music. Around 1 or was it 2 am – I can’t remember, we were all trying to pick the sand out of our eyes, but “klaasvakie” was determined. It was bed-time and a well deserved rest awaited us all.

Saturday-morning – waking up on the floor, with sore backs and bums. Mattress consternation, slowly leaking its “breath” away, we ended up having to buy another. With the help of Gustuv we got a “long life mattress” from the Co-Op and had once again some soft “breath” to sleep on.

We all decided to take a nice drive to Worcester for some fish and chips. However we had to start the day with coffee and homemade “beskuit”, from Leana. This is really the nicest rusks I have eaten in a long time. Thanx Leana, we have to order some to stock up our cupboards.

Just as we were about to leave, “liefie” and Jean brought the mattresses they bought, a huge mountain of ice and a Mac Breakfast Burger for each of us. Thanx guys, my first Mac Breakfast Burger ever. Not to shabby! We were on our way at around 10.30 am and the drive in the Buggies was wonderful. We met up with Christo and Sandra in Worcester and we drove to the fish and chips shop. Arriving there, Kareen popped her head out of their cozy Merc with a big smile. Mitch and Miguel in tow. We bought our fish and chips and found a spot under the trees to enjoy our meal. Ouboet, Jean and “Liefie” opted for Kentucky, but all the same we had a wonderful chow. We returned to the camp and helped with “die tent opslanery” and then relaxed for a while around the fire. I went for my first ever “buitelug” shower. In die begin het ek half bang gevoel om my klere in die ope-lug uit te trek, but after I made sure that no-one came close, it was fun with the bum in the sun - J

Leana and Leanie arrived after a morning of hard work and at last the Nel-family was complete again. The kids (Jean included as a “kinders” but not a “kinders” any longer) had so much fun in the river, “foefie-sliding, canoeing and rafting. The adult “kinders” decided to join them for a bit of fun. After Jannie and his wife arrived, nice see-ing you again, by the way, we all went down to the river for some fun. The ladies (except Kareen that manned the camera on dry ground) opted for the raft. Fully clothed, with cigarettes and drinks in hand, we sat high and dry on the raft, looking upon nature at its best. This was awesome and definitely my highlight of the camp. Christo, ons Hanswors, wanted his wife to join him in the water and started rocking our boat. I do not do the swim thing in water where I cannot see the bottom, so needless to say, my heart was hammering something fierce, but I was rather surprised that Leana was so calm. Sandra jumped in and played on the tubes for a while, while the men decided to join us on the raft. Anton and Jannie were our sailors while the other men opted to stay in the water. Everything was fine and then Chrito wanted his wife back on the raft – and o goodness – everything was wet and under water. My cigarettes and Bic Lighter drowned while I struggled to get off the raft as quick as possible without swimming. Bic in hand and onto dry land, the lighter was true to the word – wet and first strike, it works perfectly. Well I was impressed!

This time the shower called. Clothes and all I jumped in and soaked up the warm water. Warm and ready again for a nice fire and some soft music - this time, I joined my friends and had another super evening around the fire. Sunday arrived way too soon. We had to think about packing up and leaving for the real world again. But not before some coffee and rusks for breakfast. After packing up we left for the ride back to Cape Town.

Ouboet and Leana, we want to thank you for a super camp. This was a get away place I will remember for a very long time. It is times like this with great friends, that one will remember for ever.
