A Bit of History
The history of the Beach Buggy dates all the way back to the early sixties, built primarily as light weight off-road vehicles following a simple concept, powerful engines, light weight chassis and big tires for good traction. Two of the earliest VW-based beach buggies produced were the EMPI Sportster and the Burro, manufactured by H.T. Thompson. Both were functional off-road machines that were frequently used in competitions.
The Beach Buggy as we know it today is the result of Californian designer Bruce Meyer’s work, he used the readily available and very inexpensive rolling chassis of the Volkswagen Type 1, more known as Beetle, to carry the light weight glass fibre body he had designed. The floor pan of the beetle had cleverly been shortened to improve ground clearance and manoeuvrability

This buggy design (named Meyers Manx) was debuted in Fountain Valley, California in 1964 and took the world by storm, achieving world-wide recognition when it won the Baja 1000 and its own class in the famous Pikes Peak hill climb race.
Approximately 5000 units of the original Meyers Manx Beach Buggy were produced but due to its simple construction and a lost patent case, it was soon copied and hundreds of look-a-likes have been produced and sold all over the world.

Previous Run: OUBOET EN LIANA SE KAMP 6 – 8 MAART 2015
Dis weer tyd vir kamp en ek en Lolliepop weet nie waar om die “Buggers” heen te neem nie, want die meeste plekke is reeds vol bespreek. Ten laaste besluit ons op Langebaan (Oostewal) Kampeerterrein.
Ek en Lolliepop besluit toe sommer om die Vrydag ‘n dag se verlof in te sit en dit ‘n lekker langnaweek te maak. Vrydagoggend vroeg ry ons en Tobie van Tulbagh af. Langs die pad, by “Du Vlei” padstal, Breakfast ons eers lekker voor ons die pad Langebaan toe aanpak. Daar aangekom het ons die kampplekke uitgesit en kamp opgeslaan en die nodige verversings gaan koop. Ek en Tobie het vir ons ‘n lang Whisky gegooi en gewag vir die ander Buggers.
Jean en Leandra was volgende en het sommer onmiddelik tent opgeslaan en ietsie gegooi vir die dors.
En daar hoor ek die dreuning van ‘n Beach Buggy …….alhoewel daar ‘n e-mail gestuur is dat almal maar met hul motors moet kom omdat ons so min gaan wees, was dit die ou staatmakers, Niel en Marie in “Groen Mamba”. Nadat hulle ietsie vir die keel gevat het, het hulle tent opgeslaan.
Volgende was dit Hennie, Yolandi en grootman Ethan met omtrent die hele Makro se kampeerafdeling. Ethan het vir Pa en Ma gou gehelp en siedaar daar staan die Le Roux’s se tent.
Ons het net die kampvuur aangesteek toe “Tata” en Naomi opdaag. Soos gewoonlik is die Kleyns nie haastig om op te slaan nie. Naomi hardloop gewoonlik vir die toilet en “Tata” keer die kar om om by daardie twee “GIF” bottels uit te kom en ietsie te gooi om net moed te kry om daai tent op te slaan.
Dit was reeds sterk skemer en die windtjie het koud gewaai toe die Jacobse opdaag in hulle “Electric Orange” Ranger 4X4 Double Cab. Na ‘n paar harde woorde van Sandra en ‘n geskarrel in die donker, staan die Jacobse se tente ook.
Almal het rustig geraak langs die vuur en gebraai en tot laat gekuier.
Saterdagoggend het ons ‘n run (Hamburger Run) na Juffroushoogte onderneem om ‘n “Moerse Burger” te gaan eet. Daar het ons lekker gekuier en almal het die Moerse Burger geeet waarna ons Cocktails by Club Mykonos gaan drink het.
Die Saterdagaand het ons weer groot vuur gemaak en lekker as ‘n groep pelle saam gekuier tot laat.
Sondagoggend het almal langs die lagoon gaan stap en met ons terugkeer het elkeen stadig maar seker opgepak en terug gery na hul bestemmings.
Alhoewel ons min mense op die kamp was, was dit vir ons ‘n lekker rustige kamp en wil dankie se vir Tobie, Jean, Leandra, Niel, Marie, Hennie, Yolandi, Ethan, Anton, Naomi, Christo, Sandra, Maxi, Cillie en Lelanie (wat Saterdagaand kom kuier het), julle teenwoordigheid het bygedra tot die sukses van die naweek se verrigtinge. Dankie julle!!!

Hi, we meet at Shoprite at 8:00 to leave at 8:30.
We will be having breakfast in Riebeek Casteel, maybe at the Royal Hotel or at another little place further down the road.
I think Ouboet, Liana, Marcus and Michelle can meet us somewhere on the road – it’s pointless them coming out this way.

The other day I was stopped by a metro officer for a brake light that doesn’t work, I told him it’s due to load shedding.

Gatiep and Karools are sitting on death row. Gatiep says to the Warder, “does this take long and is it painfull?” Warder says: “no they just strap you in and flick the switch and its over.” Karools is called in, moments later Gatiep hears screeming shouting and this carries on for quite a while. Gatiep says to the Warder: “I thought you said it was quick and painless.” Warder replies: “as result of the load shedding they have to use candles.”
If Eskom thinks they can stop us from charging our Mobile phones with electricity. They mistaken. We still have our car cigarette charger to continue sending Eskom jokes.
